Alltech Kentucky Campus Office Expansion

The following project was submitted to AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Quality Awards program in 2021 in the Ceilings category.
This office expansion project was for the Kentucky Campus of Alltech, which serves as the international headquarters of the multibillion-dollar biotechnology company. The job gave AWCI member contractor Grayhawk, LLC, a project area of 72,936 square feet and a materials list that included 45,000 square feet of acoustical ceilings, 3,700 square feet of metal ceilings, 2,500 square feet of ceiling clouds, nearly 34,000 square feet of wallboard and a dome with 4,000 fiber optic lights.
The architect incorporated 10 different specialty ceiling solutions, and the result is a stunning architectural showpiece of high-end products, whether it is an individual space highlighted by one or by a combination of specialty ceiling treatments.
But personal relationships were as much of a challenge as the construction. The demanding owner expected the highest quality of finishes and craftsmanship, so Grayhawk had to coordinate the highly detailed millwork, casework and a high-end lighting/control package that did not allow for high production output. In addition, Grayhawk’s pace was controlled by many other trades and the watchful eye of the business co-founder. If the aesthetics of the design did not suit the owner, there was no hesitation to order a total rework to a different solution.
In the end, Grayhawk’s work was completed in 191 weekdays (11,380 man-hours), and the unique concentration of specialty ceiling products installed with precision craftsmanship elicits “wow” reactions from the owner, employees and visitors—a testament to the excellence of the finished product.
