S. Tryon Tower Upfit

The following project was submitted to AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Quality Awards program in 2021 in the Drywall category.
This, the fourth tallest building in Charlotte, N.C., stands over 600 feet tall and has 33 stories with an average of 20,500 square feet per floor.
Precision Walls’ innovative use of drywall assemblies in this office building created high-end finishes throughout. (The lobby ceiling is shown in the photo.) Cantilevered soffits wrapped around the core of the floors, framing the hallways to access restrooms and elevator lobbies. These soffits would also outline factory-cut wood slat ceilings, so, like many other drywall transitions on this project, there was little room for error with hand-pulled drywall corners. Creative overhang and reveal accents created dimension throughout each floor and office space. Complete with a Level 5 finish on the walls of the S. Tryon Tower, a flawless high-quality product was executed.
Material handling was one of the biggest challenges facing the team at Precision Walls. Procuring materials (9,616 square feet of drywall, 10,372 square feet of shaftwall, 3,790 buckets of joint compound, etc.) and sequencing with other trades required innovative coordination. Thoughtful and creative use of newer industry materials also played an important role in the tower’s completion that might be impacted by problematic logistics. Due to the sheer size of this upfit, along with high-quality drywall details and intricate transitions with other finishes, it was imperative that unique methods of material handling and considerations were executed.
After hours of meetings and coordinating, and with over 130,000 man-hours, the pride and hard work of the Precision Walls team is clear in the beautifully designed office space of the S. Tryon Tower. The complex nature of every component took careful considerations, from the beginning idea phases, to making them realities.
