The following project was submitted to AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Quality Awards program in 2021 in the Stucco category.
The Performance Venue is located on 298 acres and surrounds the SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. The project includes shops, commercial office space, restaurants, a hotel, parks, an artificial lake and 2,500 housing units. The magnitude, design and expectations of this project were tremendous. Challenges surrounding the scale, the radius walls (every stud a different radius), and the schedule were overcome and the end result is one of beauty and quality.
AWCI member Raymond – Southern California began their stucco work in June 2020 and finished in August of that year with a total of 130,000 man-hours. Their contract’s total project floor area was 201,549 square feet that required 87,105 square feet of stucco.
Difficulty on this project surrounded its massive scale, design and fast-paced schedule. The project’s radius walls included each stud with its own individual radius and own design—no stud was the same. Façade redesign required completing 87,105 square feet of framing, sheathing, scaffold and plaster within a 2.5-month period. This forced a huge amount of labor to work 24 hours.
Thermal requirements, waterproofing and the plaster system were a challenge based on the radius design (each stud a different radius with its own specific layout) of the building. Extra effort, money, time and manpower were put into this project to make the building one of a kind and exceed quality expectations.
