The Lobby at 353 Sacramento Street

San Francisco, California

AWCI Member Contractor: California Drywall

The following project was submitted to AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Quality Awards program in 2020 in the Small Projects category.

The new owner of the high-rise at 353 Sacramento Street in San Francisco was determined to increase the building’s value to its tenants. So, a renovation was needed to embrace the evolution of lobbies as the collaborative third workplace and create a significant differentiator/competitive edge.

California Drywall was called in to complete the drywall (17,912 square feet) and steel framing (13,300 linear feet) work, which began March 1, 2018 and finished on July 12 of that year (1,688 man-hours).

The architect designed a thoughtful entry experience to be a welcoming transition from the sidewalk to the grand double-height 2,931-square-foot lobby, and from the quiet lounge into the elevator cabs. A series of intersecting/alternating metal reveals and linear light lines, inspired by the building’s existing exterior metal panels, were crafted to weave through the impressive entry experience. In stark contrast to the previous dark green marble walls and white ceramic tile, a refined palette of reflective and warm materials reveal an informational digital dashboard and leads both tenants and guests into a quiet, soft lounge for waiting and impromptu gatherings.

Unique characteristics of the project included the linear light slots and reveals installed by California Drywall in the wall panels throughout the lobby. The reveals and light fixtures were set at varying angles that required matching the architect’s intent with the existing space. It took a team effort to layout and coordinate all the fixtures and reveals in the double-height ceilings. The existing lobby was built of stone, which California Drywall crews had to build in front of and around.

Founded in 1946 on the principles of quality, service and value, California Drywall is one of the largest specialty contractors in Northern California and the United States. The company’s ability to successfully complete projects that range in size from $5,000 to over $80,000,000 makes them a valuable team member for general contractors, construction managers and owners.
