AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Quality Award 2015

Levi’s Stadium

California

The nine-story, 1.85-million square-foot Levi’s Stadium is the new home of five-time Super Bowl champions, the San Francisco 49ers. It’s a spectacular venue that honors both tradition and 21st century style.

AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Quality Award celebrates all the AWCI members who work together on an outstanding project, and for the first time in the history of this award, three AWCI member contractors joined together in various ways to complete this first-of-its-kind hybrid, using a collective delivery model: integrated bridging design-build. Levi’s Stadium is also the first pro football stadium in the United States to receive LEED Gold Certification for new construction.

California Drywall Co. was responsible for several unique architectural elements within the stadium’s structure.

A wave-shaped wall in the museum was a particular challenge. It was framed with curved metal studs, sheathed with sheet metal and finished with taping compound.

The company also designed and installed an 18,500 square foot metal stud and drywall origami ceiling in the Brocade Club. Each panel is set at a unique angle to mimic the Japanese art of folded paper. It has 34 individual panels finished to a Level 5.

The craftsmanship of California Drywall is also evidenced in the elegant Levi’s® 501® Club. Key elements include a 20-foot dropped knife-edge soffit with a Level 5 finish on the interior. California Drywall engineered the wide expanses of sloped gypsum ceilings and columns with vertical reveals and beveled corners.

And in the stadium’s 170 luxury suites, California Drywall met the challenge of intricate and precise framing, hanging and taping for the multi-angled aluminum insets to guide the doors at the folding glass wall system at the front of the suites.

With only 14 months left in the 29-month schedule, Bayside Interiors, Inc. was brought on board for the construction of a number of specialty ceilings.

Many specialty high-end, long-lead materials had to be procured, fabricated to a one-of-a-kind design, and installed in a short time frame. More than 15,000 square feet of FSC Certified Bolivar wood with a Tabu veneer were hung in place by strut framing with compound slopes while keeping half-inch reveals between the panels—each one a different size! The job also encompassed more than 107,000 square feet of metal panel systems, including almost 12,000 square feet of high-profile aluminum beams and baffles.

William l. Fischer II, senior project manager at Bayside Interiors, said in his description of the challenges: “The collaboration within our own company between the stud framing, strut framing, access floor, painting, and acoustical and specialty ceiling departments was like nothing before it. We are very proud to have also been an intimate part of the onsite team made up of architects, manufacturers, engineers and other trades. I’m proud of the fact that Bayside Interiors played a huge part in finding solutions for jobsite conditions to meet the wants and desires of the finishes envisioned.”

The third AWCI member contractor involved on this award-winning project, Anning-Johnson Company, was brought in to keep the building and its users safe with 1.2 million square feet of metal decking securely supporting any concrete underfoot, 700,000 square feet of thermal insulation (pre-colored and moisture-resistant) and 60,000 sacks of fireproofing.

The playbook for Levi’s Stadium demanded high standards and an extremely aggressive construction schedule, with complex design and construction challenges. California Drywall Co., Bayside Interiors and Anning-Johnson Company helped bring the 49ers a huge win with Levi’s Stadium.
