AWCI on the Job

Green Building Is the Subject of the Next Foundation White Paper

Green building is the subject of the new white paper in the Research Series of the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry. The publication, Green Building: Understanding, Bidding and Building Green, is available to all AWCI members as of this month and marks the start of the Foundation’s annual fund-raising drive.

The white paper covers various aspects of green building that every wall and ceiling contractor should know about. The U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and contractors who read the document will find how easy it is to earn LEEDR® points for walls, ceilings, finishes, framing, insulation and exterior insulation and finish systems.

This publication is divided into two primary sections: Introduction, Part 1—The Basics of LEED® and Part 2—The Big Picture. The first part addresses the need for the construction industry to improve its use of resources to lessen its impact on the production of carbon dioxide. If you are not already a believer in this need, this publication will not, by itself, convince you to change your position. It will tell you what the rest of the construction industry-owners, legislators, building officials, contractors and users are doing to make a difference.

Since the purpose of the paper is not to change your mind about carbon footprints, part two talks about what contractors need to know about this green movement—which is not going to go away.

Green Building: Understanding, Bidding and Building Green is the eighth publication in the Foundation Research Series. Publications such as this are made possible because of the monetary support from members.

Those who donate for the first time and give $250 will become a member of the Foundation Leadership Council. Those who match their contribution from last year will become members of the Foundation’s Leadership Council. Those on the Leadership Council are recognized on the Foundation’s letterhead as well as in various promotional materials, convention signage and other publications throughout the year.

AWCI’s Fall Conference Hot Buttons: The Economy, ConsensusDOCS

Join your friends and colleagues in Honolulu for AWCI’s Industry Executives Conference & Committee Week, Oct. 14–18, 2008, at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. The education sessions at this fall conference will inform attendees about the slow economy and ConsensusDOCs.

The Economy’s Slower—Now What?, with speaker George Hedley, will teach you how to take advantage of the ever changing construction business. Attendees will look at what needs to change, including finances, organizational systems, people, equipment, markup and more. When you leave this session you will be able to identify positive trends and make the necessary changes required to take your business to the next level in any economy, whether it is hot or not.

The second session, What You Need to Know about ConsensusDOCS, with speaker Don Gregory, Esq., will address how ConsensusDOCS apportions the risks commonly encountered on projects, the diverse support for ConsensusDOCS, and provide a comparison to other standard-form contracts.

These and other education opportunities will be offered at the fall conference, along with committee meetings, tours and receptions.

AWCI’s meetings department suggests that you make your airline reservations sooner rather than later, due to the increased fuel costs that airlines are passing down to consumers.

And while you are making your airline reservations, book your hotel as well. The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is offering special rates of $199 per night, single or double, for a partial ocean view room, or $219 per night, single or double, for an ocean view room. To guarantee special rates, reservations must be made by Aug. 25, 2008. Reservation requests received after the cut-off date will be accepted on a space-available basis. Call the Waikiki Beach Marriott reservations department at (808) 922.6611.
